Speaking in a government session in June, Transport Ministry representative Aleksey Semyonov presented what could become a new and integrated information system for the Russian Arctic.

The development of the system will allow all stakeholders involved in regional transport operations to get better and safer access to information about navigation and security, Semyonov said.

Furthermore, the official underlined, it will also give us «independence from foreign information and communication and provide us with full control over the management of transport flows in the region», a press release says.

The new integrated United Protected Information and Communication System will be based on fiber-optic, radio and satellite technology, including the GLONASS, Gonets, Luch, Inmarsat and more.

In this way, the system will guarantee the users diversified and reliable information, the Ministry underlines. It will also include the introduction of a fleet of UAVs - drones - in the region.

According to Izvestia, special centers for handling and storage of the navigational, technical and hydrometeorologic data will be established.
