«Arctic Floating University» arrives in Novaya Zemlya

With 56 students from seven countries on board the «Professor Molchanov» embarks on Russian Arctic waters.

The expedition, the eighth of its kind, on 7th June left Arkhangelsk and set course for Novaya Zemlya, the great, secretive and militarized Russian archipelago. The «Professor Molchanov» on Monday passed the island of Vaigach and is expected to arrive in Malye Karmakuly, a meteorological station, in the course of Tuesday, the expedition program shows.

The name of this year’s expedition is «Solving the  mysteries of Novaya Zemlya».

The young researchers will proceed to the local settlements of Russkaya Gavan’, the Maka Bay and then to Mys Zhelania, the northernmost point of Novaya Zemlya on 18th June. The «Professor Molchanov» will also make a stop in Varnek in Vaigach before it returns to Arkhangelsk on 27th June, the university informs. 

The students are in the course of the expedition given a series of lectures by leading Arctic researchers. 

The «Arctic Floating University» is organized by the Northern (Arctic) Federal University in Arkhangelsk.
