Arctic carrier becomes shipping company of the year

The Arkhangelsk-based Northern Shipping Company was the best in the country in 2015, the Russian Ministry of Transport decides.

As shipping in Russian Arctic waters hikes in connection with industrial projects and military base developments, the Northern Shipping Company (NSC) wins the title as Russia best industry company 2015.

The NSC has benefited greatly by the unfolding oil and gas projects in the Arctic, among them the Yamal LNG and Gazprom’s Bovanenkovo project. In addition, the company carries major volumes for the Russian Armed Forces in connection with construction of new Arctic bases.

In 2015, the company shipped primarily to Sabetta, Pevek, Dikson, Novaya Zemlya, Igarka, Katanga, Spitsbergen, Franz Josef Land and the New Siberian Islands, the company informs on its website. In a unique operation, a company vessel in November 2015 transported helicopters to the Nagurskaya base in Franz Josef Land.

The award was handed over to company representatives in a recent meeting in the Federal Agency for Sea and River Transport, the NSR informs in a press release. The company wins the award for the first time.

The NSR was established in in 1922 and has since been engaged in shipping operations along Russia’s Arctic coasts. The company is today owned by the Murmansk Shipping Company. It has a fleet of 34 vessels with deadweights ranging from 2,500-14,000 tons.
