Finland might ban property sale to Russians

Deputies in the Finnish Parliament have signed a bill suggesting that non-citizens of the EU should not be allowed to buy land and other property in Finland.

Such a ban would first of all concern Russians.

The main reason for fronting a ban is the lack of reciprocity in property questions between Russia and Finland, the deputies say. In January 2011 President Medvedev signed a decree defining Russian areas where foreign citizens are not allowed to own land. The list includes near all areas towards Norway and Finland, from Pechenga in the north to the Gulf of Finland in the south.

Russians, on the other hand, are free to buy land and other property in Finland. Russians’ acquisitions of property have lead to higher prices on land and houses in the Eastern and South-Eastern regions of Finland, YLE writes.
