Online campaign against Kola NPP

Ecologists from Norway and Russia launch petition aimed to close the nuclear power plant.

The letter argues that both the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Russian experts at a State Council session claim the reactors have inadequate safety levels.

The campaing is organized by Nature and Youth in Norway and Priroda i Molodezh in Russia. Other environmental groups and political youth parties are supporting the campaign.

“Kola Nuclear Power plant is a global issue, which concerns many other countries than Russia. We hope this campaign will grow, and that people from all over the world want to sign our demand. We find it remarkable that the old, dangerous and illegal reactors continue to operate, despite the negative opinion of the local population” says Vitaly Servetnik, head of antinuclear group in Priroda i Molodezh in Murmansk to BarentsObserver.

Stine Østnor, member of the central in Nature and Youth says: “We created this campaign to give ordinary people a chance to make sure Kola NPP is being shut down in a safe way. Our experience is that politicians never act unless the population force them to. Hopefully we will get enough signatures to shut down the old reactors at Kola NPP.”
