Lavrov calls on Norway to show constructive approach
Russia concerned about Norway’s increased seizure of trawlers around Svalbard.
Foreign Minsiter Sergey Lavrov called the Norwegian Foreign Minsiter Jonas Gahr Støre on Thursday following the Norwegian Coast Guard’s seizure of several Russian trawlers in the waters around Svalbard over the latest weeks.
On September 28, the Norwegian coast guard arrested the Russian trawler vessel “Sapphire II“ for dumping of fish in the fishery conservation zone near Svalbard. The trawler was towed it to the port of Tromsø.

In the phone-conversation Sergey Lavrov emphasized to Jonas Gahr Støre that the Norwegian actions doesn’t correspond with the agreed issues about presereving the favourable regime for the Russian fishery in conditions of sea delimitation between Norway and Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a press-release following Lavrov’s call to Støre.
Sergey Lavrov and Jonas Gahr Støre will meet in person next Wednesday at the Barents Council meeting in Kiruna in northern Sweden.
