Sámi want office in the Big Apple

The Norwegian Sámi Parliament wants to open an office in New York.

- We wish to have a direct channel to the UN, and therefore we want to open an office in New York, says advisor Vibeke Larsen at the Sámi Parliament to Ávvir, NRK reports.

The Sámi Parliament’s budget proposal suggests allocating NOK 1 million (app. €125,000) to the office.

According to Larsen, the Sámi representatives have difficulties getting response from the Norwegian Government on issues that are important to the Sámi people. The law on mineral resources, expansion of national parks and preservation on Sámi land are some of the issues that have put the relationship between the Sámi Parliament and the Government on test, she says.
