Border town must remove garbage mountain

Regional prosecutors in Murmansk demand that the border town of Nikel cleans up a 60,000 square meter area used as dump site.

The prosecutors maintain that the dump site, which is located along a forested area south of the town, is unsanctioned and that the garbage therefore must be removed. Town authorities will have to clean up and recultivate the area by 1 October 2011, MBnews.ru reports.

The dump contains major amounts of metal components, waste products of wood and paper as well as other wastes. It has been used widely by the municipal public services, the news agency informs. The Pechenga regional court has approved the suit filed by the prosecutors.

Nikel is the town centre in the municipality of Pechenga. It is located along the border to Norway and has about 20,000 inhabitants.
