Court closes LKAB mine
A court verdict forces LKAB to close its mine in Svappavaara, northern Sweden, after less than one year of operations.
A Swedish environmental court on Thursday decided that the mining company will have to close the Svappavaara mine located in the northernmost county of Norrbotten.
The mining activities violate environmental regulations in the area, the court argues. LKAB has already announced that it will appeal the court decisions, Swedish Radio reports.
The mine has been in operation for only ten months. About 100 people will lose their jobs following the closure. LKAB will lose at least 500 million SEK from the closure, the company informs in a press release.
