World’s first cross museum on Solovki

Over 1,000 crosses will be on display on Solovki in the White Sea.

The museum will open in 2013 with the blessing of Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Visitors to the museum will learn about the development of cross’ shapes and traditions of cross-cutting handicraft. The museum will be located in the former biological station on the main island of Solovki, reports Russia Information Centre.

Solovki has centuries of rich church history, unique nature and was the site of a cruel labor camp in the Stalin-period.

Today, the island in the White Sea belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church.
