Tromsø teams up with Arkhangelsk
Norway’s Arctic capital Tromsø has too many twin towns and intends to terminate the agreement with several. Arkhangelsk is the only new one to come.
Arkhangelsk is the largest city in the Russian part of the Barents Region and Tromsø sees joint cooperation on business and petroleum development in the Arctic as the two main pillars in future cooperation.
Also, the universities, hospitals and cultural players in the two cities already have good cooperation. Tromsø and Arkhangelsk also have flight connection, the only such cross-border flights within the Barents Region today.
Major of Tromsø, Arild Hausberg, says not all twin town relations are working well. – Some of the towns are just on the list, says Hausberg to Nordlys.
Arkhangelsk, on the other side, is however a city Tromsø wants to team up with. Last week, major of Arkhangelsk Victor Pavlenko visited Tromsø and signed a Letter of Intent with Tromsø. The final twin town agreement is planned to be signed in Arkhangelsk this summer.
Tromsø has today twin town agreements with Anchorage (USA), Gaza (Palestina), Grimsby (England), Kemi (Finland), Luleå (Sweden), Murmansk (Russia), Nadym (Russia), Pune (India), Quetzaltenango (Guatemala), Ringkøbing (Denmark) and Zagreb (Kroatia).
Tromsø Major Hausberg will not state which cities that might be cut from the list, but says to Nordlys that the twin town cooperation with Anchorage, Murmansk and Gaza are working perfect.
Arkhangelsk has twin town agreement with Portalnd and Maine (USA), Piraeus (Greece), Emden (Germany), Slupsk (Poland), Malhause (France), Kiruna and Ljusdal (Sweden), Oulu (Finland) and Vardø (Norway).
