Gas field explosion in Yamalo-Nenets kills one, injures 12

One worker died and another 12 were injured in an explosion at a Novatek gas processing plant in Russia’s Yamalo-Nenets region on Wednesday, Vesti reports.

The explosion occurred on Wednesday afternoon in a pipe leading natural gas from the Khancheyskoye deposit in the Russian Arctic region. The explosion resulted in 13 people receiving injuries of various degrees, Vesti reports. One of the injured workers died on the way to hospital.

The explosion destroyed the control center and a number of offices in the gas complex.

Novatek, Russia’s largest independent gas company, produced 3.1 billion cubic meters of gas last year from the Khancheyskoye field, where the explosion took place. This was around one-tenth of the company’s total production last year, according to a Reuters report, website Upstream Online writes.
