The fire started at 6.30 a.m. in the sauna in the living quarters on board the platform, operator ENI Norway informs.

Goliat is the world’s northernmost offshore oil filed in production, located some 85 kilometres north of Hammerfest on Norway’s Barents Sea coast.

When the fire alarm bells were triggered, production was halted and people on the platform entered the lifeboats. It did not become necessary to evacuate the platform, though.

“The situation quickly came under control, but some smoke development did occur,” the company writes in a press-release. None of the about 120 crewmembers were injured in connection with the fire.

Eni Norway says the company takes the incident seriously and is initiating an investigation to find causal links and lessons learnt.

The company assures all safety procedures worked appropriately.
