Oulu paper mill plans to cut 400 jobs

Stora Enso’s paper mill in Oulu, northern Finland, on Monday announced it starts co-determination negotiations with the employees regarding a planed closure of the paper maching and a sheeting plant.

400 of the 600 employees in Oulu could lose their jobs as a result of staffing changes when the plant will be converted from producing coated wood-free paper to packaging board production, the company informs in a news-update.

Market demand has for years dropped as people worldwide are turning away from printed magazines to reading online publications.

In Oulu, the plan is to close one of the machines and convert another one to produce packaging board. Conversion will be completed by the end of 2020 at the latest, Stora Enso writes.

Worldwide, Stora Enso has some 26,000 employees in 30 countries and is one of the top 10 global providers of paper, biomaterials and wooden constructions.
