Two missiles were launched on Saturday morning “in accordance with the combat training plan,” the Russian Defense Ministry says.

The Delta-IV class submarine “Tula” launched a Sineva missile, while the Borey-class sub “Yury Dolgoruky” in submerged posision launched a Bulava missile. One missile hit the target on the Chizh range on Kanin Peninsula in the northern part of Arkhangelsk region, while the other hit its target at the Kura range on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

A video from Defense Ministry shows “Yury Dolgoruky” in the Barents Sea, but it is not indicated from where in the Arctic Ocean “Tula” was at the time of launch. Both missile launches are reported to be successful, the ministry says.

The “Tula” and “Yury Dolgoruky” both belongs to the Northern Fleet and have Gadzhivyevo northwest of Murmansk as home port.

The Russian navy will get several new ballistic missile submarines of the Borey-class in the years to come. You can read more about all current and new nuclear-powered submarines in a recently published paper (pdf) by the Barents Observer.
