Kuznetsov modernization will cost €657 million
Russia will be without any aircraft carrier until late 2020 as repair work on «Admiral Kuznetsov» starts after summer.
TASS reports that the contract value for the modernization work is almost 40 billion rubles (€657 million). Work will take place at Naval Yard No. 35 (in Murmansk) and Roslyakovo north of Murmansk where the largest floating dock on the Kola Peninsula is situated.
«Admiral Kuznetsov» last winter became world-wide known when participating in Russia’s Northern fleet flotilla sailing from the Kola Peninsula to the Mediterranean for bombings of targets in Syria.
Launched in 1990, the 305 meters aircraft carrier is Russia’s largest warship. Last major overhaul was made between 1996 and 1998.
According to naval sources speaking to TASS, all electro-mechanical components, including the main propulsion system, will be repaired. Several of the engine-boilers will be replaces and the runway will be upgraded.
Also, the cruise-missiles system will be replaced from Granit missiles to the Caliber missiles, according to the source.
