Murmansk mayor puts eyes on federal politics

Aleksey Veller has submitted his candidacy for the upcoming State Duma elections.

Veller, who has served as Murmansk city mayor the last six years, has handed in the documents needed for him to run in the vote due 18 September, the regional United Russia Party informs. 

«I intend to take part in the United Russia primaries», Veller told the local press as he submitted his bid to the local party office, TASS reports. The city mayor is the second candidate to register for the vote. Recently, also Yevgeny Nikora, the former speaker in the Murmansk Regional Duma, registered his candidacy.

Aleksey Veller is a veteran in Murmansk politics. He has been member of the local city council since 2004. In 2010 he was elected city mayor and re-elected in 2014.

The Russian State Duma vote will take place on September 18th. The Duma consists of 450 members, of which half are elected from party lists and half from single-mandate districts.
