Uranium could jeopardize Lapland’s reputation
Uranium mining in Finnish Lapland could destroy the region’s good reputation among tourists, the Finnish Green League believes.
The Green League’s party council is calling for a ban on uranium mining in Finland. According to the Greens, uranium mining operations have come into the country “through the back door” and they are ruining the country’s reputation as a travel destination, especially in the north, Finnish broadcaster Yle reports.
According to party representative and member of parliament Erkki Pulliainen, a few years of uranium mining operations will be enough to ruin the reputation of Kainuu and Lapland as travel destinations.
Geological studies have revealed major uranium reserves several places in the Finnish North, among them near Rovaniemi, in Kainuu and in North Karelia.
