Bulava test launch today

This year’s first test launch of the Bulava missile is taking place today, a military representative says.

The military source also maintains that the launch will be made from the “Yuri Dolgoruki”, Russia’s first fourth generation strategic sub, which has been under construction for a long time at the Sevmash yard in Severodvinsk.

If the five test launches planned for this year are successful, the Bulava missile is likely to be included in the fleet’s weapon arsenal, RIA Novosti reports.

As previously reported by BarentsObserver, seven out of 15 former tests have failed. The two last, and successful, tests took place in late October 2010. All the tests have so far been carried out from “Dmitri Donskoy” - a Typhoon-class submarine rebuilt into a test-platform for the Bulava-missile. After the successful October tests, the missile designers said more tests would take place in December, but then from the submarine the Bulava is designed for; the Borei-class Yuri Dolgoruki, however that did not happen.
