Historical rig operation in Tromsø
In April the oil rig Polar Pioneer arrives in Tromsø for rig maintenance, being the first oil rig performing such work in Tromsø.
The harbor authorities of Tromsø have invested approximately € 2 million to prepare an area outside the city centre for oil rig maintenance operations. On the 2nd of April the oil rig Polar Pioneer will anchor in Tromsø to start the maintenance and prepare it for drilling at the Skarv field outside northern Norway later this year.
The rig maintenance will engage some 30 companies in Tromsø for a two week operation. In addition around 250 skilled workers from southern Norway will be flown in to Tromsø for this job.
The Port Director of Tromsø believes such operations will be an important activity in Tromsø.
- For instance the hotels of Tromsø will sell 3500 overnight stays during the two weeks and the bus companies will transport 200 workers to and from the centre of Tromsø every day, says Port Director Hallvard Pettersen to NRK Troms og Finnmark.
