Freezing cold in northernmost Finland.

Lapland hits winter’s coldest temperature so far at -38.9°C 

The reading was recorded at 3:40am on Wednesday morning at the Tulppio weather station in northeast Finland.

The lowest temperature of this winter season was recorded at a weather station in eastern Lapland early on Wednesday morning, when a reading of minus 38.9 degrees Celsius was observed.

The Tulppio station had recorded this season’s previous record low of minus 38.2 degrees Celsius on 16 December.

Despite the bone-chilling start to Wednesday, temperatures in Lapland are expected to rise to between -15 and -20 degrees during the day.

Temperatures across the rest of the country will range from +3 degrees Celsius in the south to -8 degrees in central areas.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has also warned of hazardous driving conditions in the east on Wednesday, with up to 10cm of snowfall expected during the day.
