Mariinsky Opera to visit Tromsø
The world famous operahouse Mariinsky Theatre will for the first time show a full opera performance in Norway when it visits Tromsø in February.
All tickets were sold out within minutes when Nordlysfestivalen (The Northern Lights Festival) yesterday opened the ticket sales to Mariinsky’s performance of Il Viaggio a Reims by Giaochino Rossini, Nordlys writes.
The opera singers from Mariinsky will also be performing an Opera Gala concert in Tromsø’s famous church Ishavskatedralen.
This is the first time Mariinsky visits Norway with an opera performance. The theatre’s ballet company visited Norway for the first time in 2010, also then as part of Nordlysfestivalen’s program. Several of the ballet company’s finest dancers, including prima ballerina Ulyana Lopatkina, were on stage, as BarentsObserver reported.
Mariinsky Theatre is a historic theatre of opera and ballet in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Opened in 1860, it became the preeminent music theatre of late 19th century Russia, where many of the stage masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov received their premieres. The Mariinsky Theatre is home to the Mariinsky Ballet, Mariinsky Opera and Mariinsky Orchestra.
Nordlysfestivalen in 2012 celebrates its 25th anniversary. The festival has every year presented top artists from a wide variety of genres ranging from early music to modern, from opera to jazz, from chamber music to symphonic orchestras.
