Murmansk preparing for 100-year anniversary
Murmansk celebrates its 100-year anniversary in 2016. Several cultural sites and buildings will get a facelift before the celebrations start.
More than 2 billion rubles (app €48 million) have been allocated from federal and regional budgets to the reconstruction of five of Murmansk’s most important cultural institutions – the Philharmonic Hall, the Kirov concert hall, the Drama Theatre, the Scientific Library and the Historical Museum, Interfax reports.
This comes in addition to the large-scaled upgrade of the Murmansk railway station and Murmansk waterfront that has been announced earlier. These plans include the development of a 27,000 square meter complex which is to house the railway station, the sea port station, as well as the city bus station.
The largest part of the recent allocated sum – 767 million rubles – will be put into a long-needed renovation of the Historical Museum. The museum’s old building, marked by the years’ wear and tear, holds artifacts from the Second World War, Jury Gagarin’s period as a pilot at the Luostari Air Base, Arctic explorations and the life of the indigenous people of the Kola Peninsula.
