Technological breakthrough for the Russian Arctic

Russia’s ambitious goals in the Arctic can only be reached with the introduction of advanced technology, Murmansk Governor Dmitri Dmitriyenko says in a newspaper interview.

Talking to Izvestia, the governor underlines that Murmansk now is, without exaggeration, a territory of new opportunities in a unique area. He especially highlights the role of the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea and the development of port and infrastructure facilities in the region. Arctic ice melting and the subsequent opening of shipping routes along the Northern Sea Route will further boost the region’s role in the North, he maintains.

In addition, the development of several new mining projects will bring major investments also into other parts of the regional economy.

All these developments in the high north would not be possible without state support, Governor Dmitriyenko stresses. –The development of Murmansk Oblast has always been a state project, he says. At the same time, he underlines that Russia fully depends on its Arctic natural resources.

-It is hard to find any part of the Russian economy, which will be able to function without the resources extracted or produced in the North, he proclaims.
