Test-launch of ballistic missile in the Barents Sea

A Northern Fleet nuclear submarine on Sunday successfully test-launched a intercontinental ballistic missile from a submerged position in the Barents Sea.

It was the nuclear submarine “Bryansk” that launched the missile, Izvestia.ru reports, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense’s press service.

According to Izvestia, it was not informed which type of missile that was launched, but the Delta IV class submarine “Bryansk” is armed with RSM-54 “Sineva” missiles.

This missile can carry ten 100kT warheads, Wikipedia informs. In a test launch on 11 October 2008, a “Sineva” missile travelled 11,547 kilometers downrange. The missile entered service in 2007.

“Bryansk” is one of seven Delta-IV class nuclear submarines built from 1985 to 1992. All are still in service in the Russian navy today. Five submarines have already gone through modernization at the Zvezdochka shipyard outside Arkhangelsk. As BarentsObserver reported, the “Kareliya” - the latest to be modernized, is ready for its first sea trials after modernization in the White Sea in the beginning of November.
