Norway detains Russian trawler
The Norwegian Coast Guard detains the third Russian trawler in less than a month in the waters outside Svalbard.
The Coast Guard vessel Senja this week detained the Murmansk-based trawler “Izumrud” after irregularities were discovered in the vessel’s ship journal. The trawler is now being accompanied to the Norwegian town of Tromsø, Murman.ru reports.
The “Izumrud” is the third Russian trawler detained by the Norwegians in less than a month. On the 20 June, the trawlers “Anatoly Gugunov” and the “Boris Zaitsev” were detained when violoating regulations of discharge of caught fish.
Norway has established a 200 mile fishery protection zone around the Svalbard archipelago and regularly inspects the vessels fishing in the area.
