Ready for joint shooting in Arctic waters

The exercise POMOR 2011 starts with Norwegian and Russian war-vessels sailing into the Barents Sea from the Northern fleets main base in Severomorsk on Wednesday.

Norwegian and Russian naval crew were lined up side-by-side on Monday in Severomorsk marking the celebration of the Victory Day. In port, the Norwegian frigate “KNM Helge Ingstad” and the Russian Northern fleet destroyer “Vice-Admiral Kulakov” were portside each other.

The exercise will later be joined by both Norwegian and Russian jet-fighters and several maritime patrol aircraft informs the press service of the Norwegian Defence.

The two-nation exercise will move from the Barents Sea into the Norwegian Sea and southbound along the coast of Northern Norway. The naval vessels will be at port in Tromsø on May 17th, the national day of Norway.

During the coming week the naval vessels will practice shooting against sea targets and they will make interaction with search and rescue operations. The Norwegian and Russian naval vessels will also make a drill on anti-pirate operations.
