Finnish government hands in resignation

Prime Minister Mari Kiviniemi and her government is preparing to leave the Finnish government offices after this month’s election defeat.

Kiviniemi, who represents the Centre Party, will become part of the political opposition after her party got a serious blow in this month’s parliament election. The Centre Party dropped from the position as the biggest party to the fourth place and lost 16 MPs.

Kiviniemi took over the post as premier from her party colleague Matti Vanhanen last year. Her government has been a coalition of the Centre Party, the National Coalition Party, the Green League and the Swedish People’s Party of Finland.

The Government will continue to work as caretaker government until a new Government has been formed, a government press release informs.
