Students rushing to northern universities

Universities and colleges in Northern Norway have never had as many applicants as now. Subjects concerning the High North are popular.

The University of Tromsø has 3,3 percent more applicants to this year’s intake compared to last year. Also the newly established University of Nordland in Bodø has many applicants.

- Northern Norway has a large and increasing need for highly educated people, so this is positive for the social development of Northern Norway, says Rector of the University of Tromsø Jarle Aarbakke to NRK.

Subjects connected to the Arctic have become especially popular. Programs in engineering for process and gas technology and studies in societal security and ecology have respectively 65 and 76 percent more applicants. Geology is also a popular subject.

Regarding the highest number of applicants per student place, the pilot training at the University in Tromsø comes out first with 104 applicants for the 12 available places.
