More control of Arctic shelf projects
The Russian Ministry of Natural Resources intends to step up the level of control in offshore oil and gas projects.
-We will heighten the level of control, including in Arctic projects, [and] the instructions have already been given to the Nature Control Agency, leader of the Ministry’s Department of State Policy in the field of Geology and Mineral Extration Denis Khramov told RIA Novosti
The Ministry has also handed over to government a bill, which will oblige oil companies to contribute to the establishment of a special fund to be used in cases of oil spills.
Khramov admits that the recent giant spill in the Gulf of Mexico has made Russian authorities step up control routines.
