Can climate changes affect people’s health?

Scientists and Ministers of Health are looking into whether people’s health will be affected by climate change.

The health condition of animals and birds in the Arctic has several times been subject for large scientific studies. Environmental poisons have been found in gulls and polar bears. Now scientists and authorities of Arctic countries plan to conduct a grand-scale study of the health of the people.

Ministers of health from all the Arctic countries will gather in February to actuate measures that will give increased knowledge on how climate changes will affect people’s health, says Norway’s Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, according to Aftenposten.

Nearly one thousand scientists and politicians are gathered in Tromsø for the annual conference Arctic Frontiers. In his opening speech, Støre pointed that climate change can create health problems.

Russian authorities welcome the idea of a health survey:

- Russia is ready to participate in the project, says Arkhangelsk Governor Ilya Mikhalchuk. - This is important. We must cooperate and learn more from each other.
