Murmansk activists want rebuilding of historical cathedral
Activists in the “Young Guard” – a youth organization of the United Russia Party – call for the rebuilding of the historical cathedral in Kola bombed and destroyed during the Crimean War.
The youth organization has already started to collect signatures in support of the project, Murmanskpress.ru reports. The initiative was started as part of the federal project called “My History”.
The activists see the cathedral as a key historical building in the Russian North, and express confidence that they together with local authorities and public organizations will be able to reach their objective.
The cathedral was destroyed during a raid of the British corvette “Miranda” in 1854. As part of the Crimean war actions, the vessel heavily bombed the town of Kola and destroyed more than 90 houses and four church buildings, among them the unique Ressurection Cathedral. At the time, Kola was the only major settlement in the Kola Peninsula. The city of Murmansk was founded only in 1916.
