Schengen exit without human control

Finland’s border guard service is a pioneer to employ new passport control technology.

From Thursday this week, all travelers holding a passport from a Schengen-member state can pass through the passport control at Helsinki airport at automatic biometric passport readers.

No other European airports have more automatic passport readers than Helsinki-Vantaa airport.

From the start the biometric passport readers can only be used by Schengen-citizens, but in the future Finland’s border guard service will introduce such automatic passport control for all nationalities, according to a news release posted at the portal of the border guard service.

Ten biometric passport readers are installed for outgoing traffic and next year machines will come also for incoming travelers to Helsinki.
