Northern Fleet Commander appointed Admiral
Commander of Russia’s Northern Fleet Nikolay Maksimov is appointed Admiral, the fleet’s press service reports.
- The rank of Admiral is seldom presented in the fleet nowadays. The last one to receive it was the Commander of the Pacific Fleet, half a year ago, said Northern Fleet’s Press Secretary Vadim Serga to RIA Novosti. – Only two of Russia’s fleet commanders have achieved this rank, so this is a special occasion for us, he added.
Admiral Nikolay Maksimov is 54 years old. After graduating from the Naval College he served on nuclear-powered submarines in the Northern Fleet for several years and was later appointed commander of a unit of nuclear submarines.
Maksimov graduated from the Naval Academy in 1995 and from the General Staff’s War Academy in 2000. He was appointed Deputy Commander in 2005 and Commander of the Northern Fleet in 2007.
During Admiral Maksimov’s time as Commander of the Northern Fleet, the relationship between Norwegian and Russian armed forces has continued to develop in a very positive way. Last summer units from the Northern Fleet and the Norwegian Navy trained together in the joint navy exercise “POMOR 2010”.

In October 2009 Admiral Maksimov visited the Barents Secretariat’s office together with his Norwegian host Commander of the Norwegian National Joint Headquarters General Bernt Iver Ferdinand Brovold as part of a three days long visit to Norway.
Admiral Maksimov is decorated with the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, the Order of Military Merit, the Order of Naval Merit and the order for Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR.
In December 2009 he was elected “Man of the Year” in the category for navy in a national competition by the Russian Biographic Institute.
