Refurbishment yes, but not all in the scale proposed before Russia’s current economic crisis.

This week, Murmansk Governor Marina Kovtun met with bosses of Oktyabrskaya Railway discussing the plans for the railway station downtown Murmansk.

When the city celebrates 100-years anniversary in October, the railway plays a key role. Built northbound from Petrozavdsk to the Kola Bay in 1915-1917, the railway made the foundation for Romanov-na-Murmane, renamed Murmansk after the 1917 revolution.

After the meeting with the railway officials on Thursday, Governor Kovtun sent several tweets informing that new pathway bridges over the tracks are to be built and the platforms will be upgraded. She also says the facade of the railway station itself will be refurbished, as well as the square in front of the entrance.

Back in 2009, then-Governor Dmitri Dmitrienko presented a giant two billion RUB (€27 million) plan on upgrading the railway station and connecting it with the passenger seaport terminal. New buildings, terminals, halls and bus station were to be built.

“Over the next five years the city will radically change, it will get all the assets of a capital,” Dmitrienko said. That statement contrasts the realities of 2016.

Murmansk is 100 years on October 4th.

In 2009, Murmansk regional authorities presented this plan on how to upgrade the railway station and link it with the seaport terminal.
