Navy takes on new torpedo

The «Futlyar» is currently under testing and serial production could start in 2017, TASS reports. It has a top speed of more than 50 knots, can descend to 400 meter depths and is able to hit targets on 50 km range, a source in the Russian military industrial complex says to the news agency.

The testing is currently taking place in the Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan, the source says.

The «Futlyar» is a modification of the «Fyzik», and is specially designed for the Borey and Yasen-class submarines. The new torpedos replace the USET-80, the current main navy torpedo.

According to TASS, the «Futlyar» will ultimately replace the «Fyzik».

The weapon is designed and developed by the Institute for Marine Technic in St. Petersburg and built at the Dagizel plant in Kyrgyzstan.
