Government cancels moving of Navy headquarters
The Russian Deputy Minister of Defence confirms that the planned moving of the Russian Navy headquarters from Moscow to Sankt Petersburg has been cancelled.
Deputy Minister Grigori Naginski last week confirmed to RIA Novosti that the Navy headquarters will remain in Moscow. His statement ends months of speculations about the moving of the Navy staff.
Key members of the Russian government, among them Defence Minister Serdyukov, have worked hard for the moving to Sankt Petersburg. He has however met fierce resistance from the Navy itself. A number of high-ranking members of the defence structure have openly challenged the minister in the issue.
As previously reported, the moving of the headquarters was originally to start in 2009. However, the financial crisis then lead to a postponement of the plans.
