BarentsObserver desk becomes half Canadian
In May the BarentsObserver news desk will be expanded with the aid of two Canadian journalism students. Samia Madwar and Ora Morison have been given the Norwegian Embassy to Canada’s annual travel award, which is an internship at BarentsObserver.com.
23 year old Madwar and 22 year old Morison are currently journalism students at the Carleton University’s School of Journalism in Ottawa. The travel award is a cooperation between BarentsObserver.com and the Norwegian Embassy to Canada, where two students are given an internship to work at BarentsObserver for four weeks.
The two students will during these weeks work as journalists for BarentsObserver. At the same time they will learn about life in Norway in general and study key issues on the Arctic and High North policy from a Norwegian perspective. Samia and Ora have also chosen topics of special interests before arriving. Ora would like to study the situation for indigenous peoples in Norway compared to Canada. She is also focusing on digital communication in rural areas of Norway and how far development has come here compared to Canada.
Samia would like to look more closely into security on offshore operations in the petroleum industry in Norway. She is also interested in animal wild life, and how dangerous parasites on certain animals can be a threat to wild life in the Arctic.
Ora and Samia will also publish impressions from their stay in Norway through their blogs.
